GNC’s Rachel Jones on the state of the supplement industry


As we continue to face unprecedented change and opportunity, Rachel Jones, MS, RDN, Director of Nutrition at GNC, has joined NutraCast to take the pulse of the supplement industry.

Jones explained that the consumer mindset has changed, with people becoming more health conscious than ever.

“I still call 2021 the year multivitamins come back, where consumers — with everything that’s happened with the pandemic — take a proactive role in their health and get back to basics,” says Jones.

“I think a lot of good will come out of the challenges we are facing due to the pandemic. So from a supply chain challenge perspective, I think it’s pushed ingredient suppliers, manufacturers, and brands like GNC to get creative with alternative solutions. For example, if you can’t get a form of creatine, but we know it’s a fan favorite and is such an important part of some sports nutrition products, we were able to switch to alternative forms or to alternative ingredients to really deliver on the same benefit. And I think that will ultimately strengthen some of our products in the future with new and unique ingredients and new and unique solutions.

Jones added that because consumers are so in tune with their health and wellness, they’re willing to pay a little more for convenient formats like gummies, stickpacks and sachets. “So I think it will also change the product landscape.”
