The country’s tastiest tap water will be revealed at the Ixom 2021 Best Tasting Tap Water in Australia competition at 2pm on Thursday 20 January, organized by the Water Industry Operators Association of Australia (WIOA).

Water authorities from various regional and metropolitan areas of Australia have competed in state competitions, and now the state winners will compete for the national title and the chance to represent Australia in the annual international competition for Berkeley Springs water tasting held in West Virginia, US.

State representatives are:

  • ACT/NSW – Richmond Valley Council, Casino Water Treatment Plant
  • SA – SA Water/SUEZ, Anstey Hill Wastewater treatment plant
  • WA – Water Corporation, Wyndham Wastewater treatment plant
  • VIC – Westernport Water, Ian Bartlett Water Purification Plant
  • TAS – TasWater, Rocky Creek Wastewater treatment plant
  • QLD – Mackay Regional Council, Marian Water Treatment Plant

The competition will take place in Hobart at Risdon Brook Dam, Risdon Brook Park, Grasstree Hill Road, Risdon Vale and will be broadcast live on the TasWater Facebook Page starting at 2 p.m., judging will take place at 2:15 p.m. and the winner will be announced online around 2:30 p.m.

Last year’s winner came from the Rossarden Water Treatment Plant in Tasmania, which went on to win the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition.

Tap water samples will be judged on qualities such as color, clarity, odor and mouthfeel in blind taste tests, according to the Water Tasting Wheel, which describes the attributes that water professionals use to judge water.

Think wine tasting without having to spit out the samples, and you won’t go far wrong.

WIOA’s Director of Operations, Craig Mathisen, said, “The competition will reward individuals and organizations who are stepping up, some in very difficult circumstances, to ensure their communities are supplied with clean water every day.

“We want to use the competition to let people know about the great work being done in local communities across Australia and help shape and secure Australia’s water future.

“WIOA would also like to acknowledge Ixom’s support of the Best Tasting Tap Water contest during these uncertain times.

“We were able to organize the competition thanks to their unwavering commitment and support to the industry.”

Water industry organizations promote the benefits of better water use, while examining all alternative water sources to supplement the supply.

Ixom Managing Director and CEO, David Head, said: “Ixom is proud to be the sponsor of the prestigious WIOA Best Tasting Tap Water 2021 competition.

“WIOA invites all water boards and authorities to enter the contest in its search for the best tap water in every state and nationally.

“Ixom has been involved in water treatment for almost a century. We supply water treatment chemicals to water treatment plants across Australia to help ensure Australia continues to have world class high quality water.
