Green tea is derived from the leaves of a Camellia sinensis plant. These leaves are rich in two very important things: caffeine and antioxidants called polyphenol catechins. “Green tea contains a lot of catechins and caffeine, so it’s known to speed up metabolism and burn fat,” says Dr. Swift.
Studies have shown that caffeine can increase the rate of our metabolism and increase fat oxidation in our body. In other words, caffeine can help our body burn more calories and fat. However, it’s important to note that one study reported that caffeine had a greater impact on metabolism in leaner patients than in obese patients.
Green tea is packed with natural antioxidants, including those from the catechin category. They are powerful antioxidants from the flavonoid family that are also found in cocoa and certain types of berries. According to a report published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, green tea contains a specific catechin called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which is known to directly speed up your metabolism.
How Green Tea Boosts Your Metabolism
The combination of these catechins found in green tea extract, along with the caffeine found in green tea leaves, is known to be an effective duo in boosting metabolism. According to a study found in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, this combination of antioxidants and caffeine can lead to greater weight loss, faster metabolism, and higher fat oxidation.

According to a study published in Advances in nutrition, taking green tea supplements can positively affect the rate at which your metabolism works while you are at rest, both in the short term and in the long term. More research still needs to be done on how green tea affects your metabolism during and after exercise.

Green tea supplements vs drinking tea
